Lookle, Blackle - Aussie Search Engines Try Something Different
THE brands may have a certain familiar ring, and their search technology was developed by the industry’s biggest names, but two Aussie search engines each say they have developed strong points of difference that will give them an edge in the increasingly crowded online world.
For Lookle.com it is a new donation system that allows people to nominate a charity that will then receive income generated by their search habits.
Lookle, which has been around since 2000 and only searches Australian websites, recently developed and patented technology that allows it to tracks it user search habits to facilitate this service. It is powered by Yahoo! search technology.
Blackle.com, developed by Heap Media, is powered by Google and markets itself as an energy saving search engine that reduces the amount of electricity required for each search by displaying results in light grey text on a black background. It is current claiming almost 200 million ‘watt hours’ saved.
