Shopping Search Surge Over Christmas

Google Australia reports a 20% increase in search volume for shopping search during January compared with the previous year.

This follows a pre-Christmas surge of 36%. Booze, food, clothing, camera and video were the fastest-growing categories during the annual December frenzy.

Other key findings include:

  • Clothing retailers made up the largest set of the top 100 searches, followed by electronics retailers, multi-category retailers, and jewellers
  • Own-label retailers (e.g. Sportsgirl, Country Road) are the most popular clothing retailers -- they make up 40% of the clothing searches
  • The Most popular searches for catalogues were for Target and Kmart
  • "Westfield", "Chadstone" and "Doncaster" were among the most searched shopping centres

Research from the Monash Cente for Retail Studies last year claimed 50% of shoppers researched online before heading out. Search Engine Room: February 5, 2009
